The Challenge of John Chau

Perhaps you’ve heard the extraordinary story of John Chau, the young Christian missionary who tried to bring the Gospel to North Sentinel Island, one of the most remote and isolated communities in the world, and who, for his trouble, was killed before he even got past the beach. His endeavor has inspired a whole range of reactions—outrage, puzzlement, sympathy, deep admiration—and has stirred up in many people, both religious and secular, questions about the missionary nature of Christianity.

Stephen Hawking: Great Scientist, Lousy Theologian

“Is There a God?” This is the title of the first chapter of Stephen Hawking’s final book, “Brief Answers to the Big Questions.” To the surprise of no one who has been paying attention to Hawking’s musings on the subject the last several years, his answer is no. The problem is that one can be exceptionally intelligent in one arena of thought and actually quite naïve in another. This, I’m afraid, is the case with Stephen Hawking, who, though uniquely well-versed in his chosen field, makes a number of blunders when he wanders into the domains of philosophy and religion.

Stephen Hawking: Gran Científico, Terrible Teólogo

¿Existe Dios?

Tintoretto and the Reform of the Church

At the close of a long session of walking and musing through the National Gallery of Art, I was drawn by an empty and comfortable-looking couch situated at the end of one of the galleries. Plopping down to rest, I looked up at the picture right in front of me, which was Tintoretto’s depiction of Christ at the Sea of Galilee. The drama at the center of the composition is the Apostles’ boat, buffeted by choppy waves, and St. Peter taking a gingerly, tentative step onto the bounding main at the invitation of the Lord who beckons to him. My seated posture conduced toward contemplation, and I spent a good deal of time with this painting, first admiring the obvious technical skill of the painter, especially in the rendering of the water, but eventually moving to a deeper perception of its spiritual theme, of particular resonance today.

Why Remain Catholic? (With So Much Scandal)

Friends, in light of the recent scandals, I know many people are wondering whether they should remain in the Catholic Church. And I totally get that; the outrage is warranted. But in this time of crisis, I beg you not to flee, but to fight—not violently, with the weapons of the world, but with the weapons of the Spirit. We need you.

¿Por Qué Seguir Siendo Católico? (A Pesar De Tanto Escándalo)

Q&A about the Sexual Abuse Crisis

Friends, many of you have asked for my thoughts on the McCarrick abuse crisis, the Pennsylvania grand jury report, and the recent report from Archbishop Viganò. We're all devastated by the horrific suffering of these many victims, and we're all wondering what to do next. I shared some thoughts a couple weeks ago, in an article, but I thought it might be helpful to have a more candid conversation today, building on the USCCB's statement just released, which I wholly support. Please watch our discussion or read the transcript, and together let's pray for the victims and the entire Body of Christ.
